About

Soni’s headshotHi! I’m Soni and this is my blog.

About the Blog

It’s called “Shiny Bits of Foil” because those seem to be the basic constituent particles of my life at the moment, and because that’s what blogging and the Internet in general represent for me – shiny, shiny distractions that give me a good excuse not to be working or otherwise usefully occupied.

Given that it’s a personal blog, there’s no telling what you’ll find here. Probably random bits of shiny foil that catch my attention, updates on and insights into my scintillating life as a free-range writer living la vida loca in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the odd bits of navel fluff I find while cleaning out my mental attic and other such assorted odds and ends. Also, there may be poetry and essays and other writerly effluvia. ‘Cause I’m a writer and it’s what we do. Consider yourself warned.

About Me

I’m a self-employed writer by trade, a geek by temperament and autodidact by preference. (Content note: I like to use long words and creative language whenever possible. I don’t do this to impress anybody, though. I do it because I’m a writer and words are my playthings. And besides, it’s fun. But, hey, feel free to be impressed if you want to. Just be cool about it. Loyal minions are always appreciated; stalkers, not so much.)

I’m a vegetarian foodie, a Trekker, a Whovian, a MAKEr and crafter, an Internet junkie and a lapsed Pastafarian. I read too much speculative fiction, cyberpunk and sci-fi, and as a result, I’m really peeved about the fact that I don’t have access to a rocket car, nano-tech utility fog, programmable body hacks, cloned spares, mind uploading and instance-forking capabilities and a wetware bio-jack Internet hookup for full contact web surfing and personality backups. Also, a pony.

I live with my hubby and a randomly-fluctuating number of cats in our dream location of Asheville, NC, where we are currently scraping a functional living. On the downside, it costs more to be broke here than some other places we’ve been. On the upside, we get million-dollar views from the local laundromat, there are various flavors of arts and cultural festivals happening about every 30 seconds or so and there are close to 50 incredible restaurants in the downtown area alone. So, Asheville FTW.

Still here, although the blog itself is more or less closed, since I’m no longer in the ‘corps.

    Soni,

Did Hurricane Irene cause problem for you in Asheville? It spared DC with no major damage. Next is the Big Apple.

Nope. We got a bit of cloud cover and a few sprinkles, that’s it. Thanks for asking!
